Straight from the journal of Gordon Hutchison and Nevis People Management –
Considering the turbulent times we are living in, combined with the high amount of university graduates, both business owners and prospective candidates are faced with a challenge. How to go about making the right choice. Nevis People Management, a cross-border recruitment consultancy within audit, compliance and finance, tackles that problem brilliantly by connecting its clients to the most appropriate talent in the market.
By working closely with both job seekers and clients, Gordon’s enterprise sources the best people with the most valuable experience. Utilising a rigorous and innovative process, with over 80% of candidates coming from referrals or headhunt activity, Nevis People Management’s clients are presented with a range of options, designed specifically by their respective requirements.
The man behind it
The thinker – Gordon of Nevis People Management.
Gordon graduated with a Msc in Human Resource Management from Edinburgh Napier University, building up on his Bachelor in Business Administration from Southampton Solent University. The combination of his outstanding academic achievements with a career in recruitment and search, spanning over the last 15 years, shows both professionalism and determination. Having travelled across three continents and worked in London, Edinburgh, New Zealand and Australia, Gordon has accumulated a number of skills and experiences that reflect on the precision, quality, and expertise of his enterprise.
Behind the successful entrepreneur we find a family man, who enjoys listening to Bombay Bicycle Club, Stone Roses and Fat Freddy’s. His favourite foods are Thai Curry or a ‘serious Cheeseburger’. Gordon describes himself as a keen whiskey and IPA consumer, who often runs or plays five-aside to unwind. And if time permits, Gordon enjoys a relaxing game of golf from time to time.
Nevis People Management was set up in 2014 and since then has become a key player in the recruitment industry.
When launching an enterprise, timing is of paramount importance. Start off too early – a greater risk of failure; prolong the process – the wheel has already been invented. As Gordon remarks – “I felt like it was the right time…having learnt from corporate associates, it was the right time to take a risk…best thing I ever did.”
Having a good support network around you is of no lesser importance than precise timing. Family, friends, mentors. It is important to remember that an entrepreneur is not limited to his own skill set and experience. For Gordon, the biggest challenge was to ‘get back to your desk and get on with the job on a day-to-day basis’.
‘…The business I set up a number of years ago focuses on helping individuals move their career to international locations…’
Gordon talks about the support and advice provided to individuals looking for the next step in their professional development.
In essence, Nevis People Management is a business that sources talent for multinational companies across a variety of sectors – the core ones being fast movement consumer goods and the energy space. As Gordon explains below, these are sectors he is passionate about and has connections from his previous work experience.
From a successful entrepreneur to an aspiring one, here are Gordon’s pointers:
- Stay focused
- You don’t know what you don’t know, so keep an open mind
- Don’t underestimate yourself and be confident in your own ability
- Keep in touch with good people, network and learn from those around you
- Stand by your decision
- Don’t overthink past or future….’live in the moment’!
