Bright Red Sparks is our annual celebration of innovation and enterprise at Edinburgh Napier University.

The 2021 competition consists of five main categories open to Edinburgh Napier staff, students, and alumni within 5 years of graduation.

 

There are over £20,000 in cash prizes to be won, in-kind support from our amazing supporters, plus business coaching to help you reach your entrepreneurial goals.

 

Applications are now open for the Bright Ideas, Freelancer of the Year, Business for Good, and Enterprising Educator categories.

 

Apply by 5pm Monday, 21 June 2021.

Bright Ideas

Who is it for?

If you have an exciting early-stage business idea, this category is for you. All ideas and early-stage businesses within one year of trading are welcome.

What is it?

The Bright Red Sparks Bright Ideas category encourages idea generation and entrepreneurial thinking. By entering this category, you will not only submit your brilliant business idea, but showcase how it would work in reality. Ensuring that your idea is desirable, feasible, and viable is key.

What can I win?

The Bright Ideas winner will receive £1,000 to help kickstart your business.

Who is eligible to enter?

This category is open to all Edinburgh Napier students, staff members, and alumni within 5 years of graduation. You may enter as an individual or a team, as long as one of your team members meets this criteria.

How do I enter?

  • Prepare a 60-second pitch video covering:
  • Your business idea and the problem it solves

  • Who you are (and your team, if applicable)

  • Traction to date

  • Your goal in the next 12 months

  • Prepare a pitch deck which includes a slide for each of the following:
  • An explanation of your idea in one sentence

  • The problem

  • Your solution

  • Market size

  • Route to market

  • Competitors

  • Why you?

  • Submit your application form with your uploaded pitch video and slide deck by 5pm Monday, 21 June 2021.

Freelancer of the Year

Who is it for?

If you are a Freelancer who consistently develops yourself and has ambitious plans for your freelance career, we want to hear from you.

What is it?

The Bright Red Sparks Freelancer of the Year category highlights self-employment as a feasible career option, and celebrates those that are already out there doing it. You don’t need to be a full-time freelancer to enter this category, but you do need to demonstrate your freelance ambition and traction to-date.

What can I win?

The Freelance of the Year winner will receive £1,000 to support the growth of your freelance career.

Who is eligible to enter?

This category is open to all Edinburgh Napier students, staff members, and alumni within 5 years of graduation. Only individuals may enter this category, and you must be registered as self-employed with HMRC before submitting your entry.

How do I enter?

  • Prepare a 60-second pitch video covering:
  • Your freelance offering and the problem it solves

  • Who you are

  • Traction to date

  • Your goal in the next 12 months

  • Prepare a pitch deck which includes a slide for each of the following:
  • Your freelance offering in one sentence

  • What sets you apart from other freelancers

  • Your biggest win to-date

  • The problem you are solving 

  • Your solution to the problem

  • Your ideal customer persona

  • Route to market

  • Competitors

Business for Good

What is it?

Business for Good celebrates businesses that have an environmental or social purpose at their core that are making a big impact.

Who is it for?

Do you have a business or social enterprise that is focused on making the world a better place? If so, the Business for Good category is for you.

What can I win?

The winner will receive £1,000 towards growing their business for good.

Who is eligible to enter?

This category is open to all Edinburgh Napier students, staff members, and alumni within 5 years of graduation. You may enter as an individual or a team, as long as one of your team members meets this criteria.

How do I enter?

  • Prepare a 60-second pitch video covering:
  • Your business and the problem it solves

  • Who you are (and your team, if applicable)

  • Traction to date

  • Your goal in the next 12 months

  • Prepare a pitch deck which includes a slide for each of the following:
  • An explanation of your business in one sentence

Enterprising Educators

Who is it for?

This category is for our amazing Edinburgh Napier staff who put ‘Enterprise’ into ‘Education’. If you have a module, project, or programme that gets Edinburgh Napier students involved in enterprise activities – we want to hear from you.

What is it?

The Enterprising Educators category celebrates enterprising approaches to teaching and learning at Edinburgh Napier University. Enterprise skills are highly valued for both employees and entrepreneurs. As such, we want to highlight our brilliant educators who are going above and beyond to ensure Edinburgh Napier students develop these skills throughout their time at university. 

What can I win?

The winner will receive £1,000 towards a university project that helps our students get involved with enterprise activity.

Who is eligible to enter?

This category is open to all Edinburgh Napier staff members. You may enter as an individual or a team.

How do I enter?

  • Prepare a 60-second pitch video covering:
  • Your unique project/programme/module and how it gets students involved in enterprise activity

  • Who you are (and your team, if applicable)

  • Progress made

  • Your 12-month goal for this project/programme/module

  • Prepare a pitch deck which includes a slide for each of the following:
  • An explanation of your project/programme/module in one sentence

  • Who is your project/programme/module aimed at?

  • Why is the project/programme/module of value?

  • What have you done so far (or what do you plan to do) to deliver the project/programme/module?

  • What impact have you had to-date (or what impact do you plan to have)?

  • Why you?

Business of the Year

Applications are now closed.

Who is it for?

If you have an existing business or a rigorously tested business idea and have ambitious plans for global growth, we want to hear from you. We welcome applications across all industry sectors and enterprise types, for both product and service-based businesses.

What is it?

The Bright Red Sparks Business of the Year category is an intensive accelerator programme with a competitive twist.

 

Over the course of seven weeks, you will be required to participate in three full 3-day sprints on the following dates:

 

  • 26, 27, & 28 May 2021
  • 16, 17, & 18 June 2021
  • •  7, 8, & 9 July 2021

 

These 3-day sprints will equip you with knowledge, tools, and support you need to help you drive the growth of your business.

In between each sprint, you will also be required to complete work assigned during the programme in preparation for the next session.

Upon completion of the programme, a final winner will be announced based on a combination of programme participation, merit, and business progress.

What can I win?

A total of £16,000 in cash prizes is on offer throughout the programme.

 

Each participant will be awarded £1,000 upon being successful in joining the programme and participating in all the sessions.

 

£2,000 will be awarded as spot prizes throughout the programme, with a final £4,000 being awarded to the overall Business of the Year winner.

Who is eligible to enter?

This category is open to all Edinburgh Napier students, staff members, or alumni within 5 years of graduation. You may enter as an individual or a team, as long as one of your team members meets this criteria. You may enter if your business is pre-revenue, as well as generating revenue.

How do I enter?

  • • Read the application form to find out what you need to prepare.
  • Submit the application form, pitch deck and video by 5pm Monday, 10 May 2021.
  • • If your application is successful, you will be required to attend an online interview between 17 – 20 May 2021.
