Meet the Business of the Year Accelerator Cohort

This year a new category, Business of the Year, was introduced to our 2021 Bright Red Sparks entrepreneurial competition at Edinburgh Napier University. Top businesses from across the Edinburgh Napier community competed to secure a place on the Business of the Year intensive accelerator programme. Upon completion of the accelerator programme, each business will receive a £1,000 cash prize along with the opportunity to pitch to a panel of judges for a share of £6,000 to boost their businesses.

The accelerator is run online by our experienced Business Advisers, Victoria Bradley and Pete McLean, and is divided into three 3-day sprints run over a seven week period. The programme has been designed to support our participants to further develop and grow their businesses.

The first sprint ran last week from Wednesday to Friday (26 – 28 May 2021), and we were delighted to see so many enthusiastic and ambitious entrepreneurs ready to take their businesses to the next level. Without further ado, we are delighted to introduce you to the businesses that make up our 2021 Bright Red Sparks Business of the Year Accelerator cohort.

Bioflat is an e-commerce app designed for sustainable shopping. The purpose of the company is to create value for the community with a greener, faster and smarter approach to online shopping. Though eco-friendly products are available, there are still customer pains in searching for the right product online and this leads to extensive difficulty to detect if a product is sustainable or simply green-washed. Bioflat’s solution is to provide an app with a variety of eco-friendly items and simplify the long online process of finding sustainable alternative products.

Dr. Abdelfateh Kerrouche: Autonomous Underwater Robot for monitoring in Aquaculture

The aim of this business is to propose an Autonomous Robot to be used for underwater survey missions in aquaculture such as mapping and collecting data related to water and fish. The robot will do inspection tasks which are very expensive with the current conventional methods. The novelty of this idea is to introduce a prototype system for sample collection and pathogen detection. This solution could change monitoring strategies for toxic molecules in water and diseases related to pathogens by providing on-site analysis capability, without the need for subjective microscopy for identification, subsequently reducing costs and processing time significantly.
