The Bright Red Sparks competition is open to students, staff, and alumni of Edinburgh Napier University. With six categories to enter, there’s something for everyone – individuals and businesses alike. PLUS we are hosting a very jazzy awards dinner on 9 April 2020 to announce our winners and throw a Bright Red Triangle community party #HellYeah.

Six categories to apply for – take your pick and apply for one or more!

Bright Ideas

If you have an exciting pre-start or early-stage business idea, this category is for you.

Going for Growth

For businesses that have been operating for 1+ years. If you have ambitious plans for growth, apply now.

Business for Good

Do you have a business that will change the world for the better? This category is for pre-start or early-stage social enterprises.

Enterprising Educators

Edinburgh Napier staff who have developed projects or programmes that get our students involved in enterprise activities, this category is for you.

Active Citizens

Have you developed or delivered a community project with a social or environmental focus? If so, this category is for you.

Freelancer of the Year

If you are a freelancer consistently striving to further develop yourself and your freelance career, apply now.

Steps to apply

Step 1:

Business Model Canvas/YOU

Business Model Canvas

*For Bright Ideas, Business for Good, Going for Growth, Freelancer of the Year categories only!

Business Model Canvas (BMC) is a strategic management and lean startup template for developing new or documenting existing business models. You will need to complete a BMC and upload it to your application form if you are applying for the Bright Ideas, Business for Good, Freelancer of the Year, or Going for Growth categories.

Step 2:

60 Second Video Pitch

No matter what category you are applying for – you will need to complete a 60 second video pitch. All pitch videos must be uploaded to YouTube (it can be made private) and then the link (and password, if applicable) added to your application form.

All pitches for those shortlisted into the Bright Red Sparks finals will be shown at our awards dinner on Thursday, 9 April 2020.

Step 3:

Application Form

With your Business Model Canvas (if applicable), and your 60 second pitch complete & uploaded to YouTube – you’re now ready to apply!

All you need to do is click the link below and head over to our application form. Answer the questions relevant to your entry, upload your Business Model Canvas, and add the link (and password, if required) to your 60 second video pitch, and that’s you in the running to win!

Applicants, what’s next?

  • • Applicants will find out by Friday, 13 March 2020, if they have been shortlisted.
  • • Shortlisted applicants will go forward to an external judging panel.
  • • External judges will select two/three category finalists.
  • • All finalists will be informed by Friday, 20 March 2020.
  • • The winner of each category will be announced live at the awards dinner on Thursday, 9 April 2020.
