Networking is an essential tool pretty much everyone must have in their arsenal. It is widely discussed and there is a plethora of different posts about it online. So why read another article solely devoted to that topic?
In the article below I will not speak about the theory of networking and all the magical benefits you get out of it. What I am going to talk about is two recent examples of the value of networking and its impact on working relationships.
Communication sales funnel
I quite like comparing networking to sales – and as with sales, you can take a look at a situation through a sales funnel framework. After all, networking is, in its simplest form, selling.
The first example I want to talk about is how a student managed to land a one week placement through their exceptional perseverance, stepping out of their comfort zone and pushing through until they got what they wanted. It was a combination of email communication, networking at events, and numerous phone calls, but in the end they managed to secure a position with one of the University’s Student led societies. Why is that important? Because in order to get what you want, you need to go out there and ask for it.
How do I network? Pitch wherever you are.
I am a great fan of the elevator pitch. Mastering the art of explaining what you do in about 20 seconds will not only be helpful at networking events – it will definitely mean you will not bore your conversation companion to death by going into unnecessary details about your ‘riveting’ job description.
Have you ever gotten a business card after having a chat with someone outside a club on a night out? It’s great! Inevitably when you meet someone for the first time, the third question they ask you is ‘So, what do you do?’. Having that lightning response ready to go comes in handy. Last time I was out and got asked that question, I landed myself an invite to a rooftop party at a Law Firm watching the festival fireworks!
We all know networking is important and we all know the value of it – so why not share your latest networking experiences with us. Email Vlad at email@example.com if you want to get a chance to be featured on our blog!
